Searing pain, tingling, or numbness in the lower back, upper buttock, or leg are all classic symptoms of sciatica, a condition which can affect your ability to walk and lead to persistent discomfort. If your chiropractor has told you that you may need sciatica treatment, then read on to learn about common causes of this condition.
In between the bones of your spine are cushioning discs that have a gel-like interior. When the outer part of one of these discs weakens or tears, the inner part can bulge outward and put pressure on a nearby spinal nerve root. This problem is referred to as a herniated disc and, in some cases, the sciatic nerve is affected and sciatica results.
When a vertebra slips forward in relation to one next to it, this is called spondylolisthesis. This condition typically develops in the lumbar spine, and the movement of the vertebra can cause nerve compression and sciatica pain. Spondylolisthesis is usually the result of trauma, spinal degeneration, physical stress, or developmental problems.
Degenerative changes in the spine can reduce the amount of space for nerves and nerve roots. This source of compression is called spinal stenosis, and when it occurs in the lower back, it may affect the sciatic nerve and cause sciatica.
When the body suffers an impact, for example, due to contact sports or a car accident, the external force can lead to compression of spinal nerve roots. For this reason, a fall or an accident can result in sciatica symptoms.
In the lower part of the spine and connected to the thigh bone is the piriformis muscle. When a spasm develops in the piriformis muscle, the sciatic nerve running beneath it can be compressed. This problem can cause sciatica symptoms and is referred to as piriformis syndrome.
